Live Music in Texas

2nd Street, Austin walking tour: Downtown Shops, Live Music (ACL Live) & Dining

The video above takes you on a walking tour of 2nd Street Austin, covering the six-block stretch between Congress Avenue and San Antonio Street in the heart of downtown. It's a good look at what you'll actually encounter on foot — the shops, the restaurants, the wide sidewalks, and most importantly for this site, the live music spots tucked into the district. David Bridwell filmed this while he was in Austin playing gigs, and the tour gives you a real feel for the area beneath those towering downtown scrapers.

What the 2nd Street District Looks Like on Foot

The Second Street District — technically part of the larger Seaholm District — sits right up against Lady Bird Lake, which means you're close to the running and biking trails along the water. The street itself is officially named Willie Nelson Boulevard, and there's a statue of Willie right outside ACL Live to prove it. Development started in the early 2000s and built out gradually through the 2010s, with the goal of creating a dense, walkable urban stretch. It worked. Wide sidewalks, outdoor dining patios, and over 50 shops and restaurants give it a feel that's part European walkway, part New York sidewalk café scene. There are more than 600 residential units and hundreds of hotel rooms here, so people actually live in this district and walk it daily. The mix of boutique shops, local artists selling their work, farm-to-table restaurants, international cuisine, and casual spots like Sweetgreen keeps it from feeling like just another outdoor mall.

What Live Music Venues Are on 2nd Street in Austin?

This is where the district really matters if you care about live music. Here's what you'll find along the strip:

  • ACL Live at the Moody Theater — The major concert venue on 2nd Street and home to the long-running Austin City Limits television show. It draws national touring acts and is one of the most well-known music destinations in the city.
  • 3TEN ACL Live — Located downstairs from ACL Live, this is a smaller, club-style room that books up-and-coming artists for more intimate shows. A great spot to catch someone before they blow up.
  • Lambert's Downtown Barbecue — A barbecue restaurant with an upstairs bar and lounge that regularly features live music. Good food and live sets in the same building.
  • Ellis — A spot looking out across Congress Avenue with live music on their outdoor deck.
  • Fairground — A food court space behind Ellis that has hosted live music in the past.
  • The Tiniest Bar in Texas — Exactly what it sounds like, and word is they occasionally have live music too.

Worth the Walk

If you're staying anywhere in downtown Austin, the 2nd Street District is an easy walk and a solid way to spend a few hours. The live music anchored by ACL Live and 3TEN gives it real weight, and stumbling onto a set at Lambert's or Ellis while you're grabbing dinner is the kind of thing that makes Austin feel like Austin. The video gives you a street-level perspective so you know what to expect before you go.
