A tour of Austin's Cherrywood neighborhood (Mueller Lake Park)

The video above takes you on a quick tour of the Cherrywood Austin neighborhood, one of those low-key residential pockets close to downtown and the UT campus that most visitors never think to explore. It's mostly houses with just a handful of businesses, but the ones that are there have real character. David Bridwell came into town for a gig at Cherrywood Coffeehouse and spent some time wandering the area beforehand, hitting up a neighborhood park and grabbing some Tex-Mex along the way.

What Is There to Do in the Cherrywood Neighborhood in Austin?

Cherrywood isn't packed with attractions, and that's kind of the point. It's a quiet, walkable neighborhood with an independent streak and a lot of personality. The area draws a younger crowd — many residents are single and child-free — which gives it a relaxed, easygoing energy without the chaos of South Congress or Sixth Street. Here are the spots covered in the video:

  • Patterson Neighborhood Park — A small, peaceful green space with benches and a pond where people fish, exercise, or just decompress. A good place to sit and do nothing for a while, which is underrated.
  • Vivo — A Tex-Mex restaurant near the park that claims to have "Tex-Mex to dine for." The food genuinely delivered on that promise. Worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood and hungry.
  • Cherrywood Coffeehouse — Despite the name, this is more of a full-service restaurant and live music spot than a simple coffee shop. They serve adult beverages, have a solid outdoor patio, and book live performers regularly. The whole place has that real, organic Austin feel — a neighborhood hangout, not a franchise.

Live Music at Cherrywood Coffeehouse

Cherrywood Coffeehouse is one of the few spots in this neighborhood where you can catch live music on a regular basis. It's small and intimate, which makes it a good room for solo performers and singer-songwriters. David Bridwell played an original song there about the perpetual worry of a vehicle breaking down on the road — a relatable topic for any touring musician driving an old truck across Texas. The crowd included friends who came out to show support, and the gig had that warm, community feel that bigger venues can't replicate. If you're a musician looking for a laid-back place to play in Austin outside the usual downtown circuit, this is one to look into.

Getting to Cherrywood from Downtown Austin

The neighborhood sits just east of I-35 and north of the UT campus, roughly a ten-minute drive from downtown depending on traffic. Mueller Lake Park and the Mueller development are right next door, so you can easily combine a Cherrywood visit with a longer walk around that area. It's close enough to everything but feels like its own little world once you're there.
