Downtown Dallas Walking Tour: Explore landmarks, parks, entertainment and historic architecture

The video above is a walking tour through downtown Dallas, covering the historic district's landmarks, architecture, parks, and entertainment spots. It's a solid look at what you'll actually find when you walk around this part of the city — from the giant eyeball sculpture to the JFK Memorial Plaza to spots where you can catch live music on a weekend night. David Bridwell filmed this on his way to play an open mic at Poor David's Pub, and the footage gives you a real sense of the streets, the buildings, and the general feel of the area.

What Is There to See in Downtown Dallas?

The main area of downtown Dallas is a designated historic district spanning about 1.5 square miles across three key streets: Main Street, Elm Street, and Commerce Street. Walking these blocks, you'll see the skyscrapers that form the Dallas skyline alongside historic hotels, banks, and old retail buildings with some genuinely interesting architecture. Notable stops include the giant eyeball sculpture (you've probably seen it on Instagram), the Pegasus statue — a flying red horse that served as the city's unofficial mascot since it was placed atop the Magnolia Oil Company building in 1934 — and the Reunion Tower with its geodesic sphere and 360-degree observation deck. The Old Red Courthouse, built in the late 1800s with red sandstone and rusticated marble, sits near the JFK Memorial Plaza and Dealey Plaza, where a white X marks the spot of the assassination. The AT&T Discovery District is a popular hangout with a fountain, public seating, a big screen, and watch parties for sporting events. They also host local music there.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Downtown Dallas?

Downtown Dallas has fewer music-focused spots than neighborhoods like Deep Ellum or the Bishop Arts District, but there are a couple of places worth knowing about:

  • Rodeo Bar — A downtown spot with live music every Friday and Saturday night in their back room, featuring a rotating lineup of Western, rock and roll, and other acts from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • AT&T Discovery District — An open-air gathering space that hosts local music alongside watch parties and other entertainment events.
  • Poor David's Pub — Not far from downtown, this is a longtime Dallas listening room. Rob Casease hosts an open mic night there, which is where David Bridwell ended up playing later that day.

The Feel of Downtown Dallas

The vibe here leans more professional than some of the other Dallas neighborhoods. A lot of people are dressed for work, and there's more of a career-person energy than a family or bohemian feel. It's a bit more polished, similar to Uptown Dallas, which sits just to the north. That said, when you duck into a restaurant or bar, you can pick up on a real community among the people who live and work in this area. It's got more culture than you might expect if you're just passing through. For a grittier, more neighborhood-driven music scene, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, or the Lower Greenville area are better bets — but downtown Dallas holds its own as a walkable city center with some worthwhile stops, solid food, and a few places to catch a show.
