Towns in Texas: Exploring Historic Granger - Railroad Heritage, Czech Culture & a Working Cotton Gin

The video above takes you on a quick tour through Granger, Texas, a small town of just over a thousand people located about 45 miles northeast of Austin. Sitting roughly 20 miles east of Georgetown, Granger doesn't get a lot of attention from most people passing through, but it's got a real history worth knowing about — and a couple of reasons to pull off the highway if you're in the area.

Railroad Roots, Czech Heritage, and a Working Cotton Gin

Granger was incorporated in the late 1800s, originally built around a railroad intersection that brought commerce and settlers to the area. The main drag, Davilla Street, still has its original hand-laid brick surface from that era. Walking along it, you'll find practical small-town staples — a feed and supply store, markets, a Catholic church, and the Granger National Bank. Some of the old buildings have a weathered, almost ghost-town look to them, but there's still real activity in the storefronts that are open.

One thing that makes Granger genuinely unusual is that it still has a functioning cotton gin, which is increasingly rare across Texas. The town also has deep Czech roots. Some residents still speak Czech and work to preserve those customs, which ties Granger to the broader Czech-Texan heritage found across Central Texas. On top of that, the area has attracted film crews over the years — scenes from True Grit were filmed here, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre house is located nearby. Granger is part of the Texas Main Street Program, which aims to leverage that historic character into economic development.

Is There Live Music in Granger, Texas?

There is, actually. Granger has a spot called:

  • The Cotton Country Club — A local venue that hosts live music and entertainment right in town. It's a straightforward, community-oriented place that fits the character of Granger.

It's not a big music destination, but if you're passing through, it's worth checking whether something's on the calendar. And if you're already out this way, the nearby town of Walburg is just a short drive down the road. David Bridwell stopped in Granger on his way to Walburg German Restaurant for Walburg Songwriter Wednesdays, a long-running live music night. The evening featured performances from Russell Bartlett, Freddy Fuller, and Greg Woodhill, with Mike Matthews hosting. The songs leaned into Texas storytelling — one standout was a tune inspired by a visit to Blaze Foley's gravesite, where the headstone was piled high with Lone Star beer cans. That kind of moment captures exactly why these small-town songwriter nights are worth seeking out.

Getting to Granger from Austin

The drive from Austin takes around 50 to 55 minutes heading northeast. Georgetown is the closest larger town at about 20 miles to the west. If you're making a day of it, you could easily pair a stop in Granger with a visit to Walburg or Georgetown for food and music.
