Live Music in Texas

A tour of Hamilton, Texas (Central Texas Road Trip)

The video above takes you on a walking tour of Hamilton, Texas, a small Central Texas town of about 3,000 people sitting roughly midway between Austin and Fort Worth along Highway 281. Rather than taking I-35 between the two cities, this more scenic route passes right through Hamilton, and David Bridwell stopped in to explore the town square and surrounding area while making the drive from Austin up to Fort Worth for upcoming gigs. What you get is a genuine look at a quiet, historic town that still functions as a regional center in Central Texas — complete with a traditional courthouse square, a few places to grab food and drinks, and yes, some live music.

History and Character of Hamilton

Hamilton's settlement history goes back to the 1850s, with cotton as a major crop driving development through the early 1900s. The railroad connected the town to surrounding areas via the North and South Texas Railway and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, turning Hamilton into an important market center with over 100 businesses involved in manufacturing, dairy, and other industries. Hamilton County is known as the Dove Capital of Texas and as cowboy country, and the town still celebrates that identity with an annual Dove Festival that's been running for over 50 years. There's also an interesting cultural note — Hamilton sits on what some consider the divide between East and West Texas, marking roughly the furthest point of settlement before the Civil War. The 1897 courthouse still anchors the town square, and other attractions include Pecan Creek Park, Ramsey The Collection (an art museum), and the claimed grave site of Billy the Kid, connected to a local man named William "Brushy Bill" Roberts who claimed later in life to be the famous outlaw.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Hamilton, Texas?

Hamilton is a small town, but there are a couple of spots right on the square where you can catch live music:

  • Woody's — A spot located along the town square that hosts live music performances
  • The Grain Draft House — A draft house on the square that features live music as part of its regular programming

Beyond music, the Ross Street Theater is home to the Hamilton Civic Theater, so there's a local performing arts scene as well.

A Worthwhile Stop on Highway 281

If you're making the drive between Austin and Fort Worth and want to skip the interstate, Highway 281 through Hamilton is the way to go. It's 115 miles northwest of Austin and 100 miles southwest of Fort Worth. The town square has active businesses including restaurants, antique shops, a clothing store, and a flower and gift shop mixed in with some older abandoned storefronts. A sign greeting visitors reads "What a Hometown Should Be," and honestly, that sums it up — it's a straightforward, no-frills Central Texas town with real history and a few good reasons to pull over and walk around.
