The video above takes you on a walk through the historic downtown of Hutto, TX — a small town about 30 miles northeast of Austin that's quietly become one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the area. With a population that's jumped from under 2,000 people just a few decades ago to around 30,000 today, Hutto is changing fast, but its downtown still has a charming, small-town feel with 19th-century buildings, local shops, a coffee shop, a flower market, and a general store. David Bridwell stopped through on his way to play a gig at one of the local spots and spent time exploring what the town has to offer.
What Is There to Do in Downtown Hutto?
The historic downtown area is the heart of Hutto, and while it's compact, there's enough to fill a solid afternoon. You'll notice hippo statues everywhere — the town's unofficial mascot, which traces back to a story about a hippo escaping from a circus train passing through the area. Beyond the downtown strip, there's a newer development called the Co-op, recognizable by a cluster of silos off the main road. The Co-op hosts a weekly farmer's market and is home to the new Hutto City Hall, plus a few food spots worth checking out. It's a good place to wander, grab food, and see locals doing their thing on a weekend morning.
Where Can You Find Live Music and Good Food in Hutto?
Hutto isn't a live music destination on the level of Austin or even Georgetown yet, but there are a handful of spots worth knowing about, especially if you're already in town or passing through on your way up from Austin:
- Downtown Hall of Fame — A casual hangout known for great burgers with a patio where they host live music. David Bridwell performed here on a Friday summer evening, playing for a relaxed crowd celebrating the end of a summer school semester.
- Happy Panini Food Truck Park — Located just across the street from Downtown Hall of Fame, this food truck park is notable for hosting live music and is home to the popular Happy Panini food truck.
- Hippo Cafe — A solid spot for a sit-down meal not far from the historic downtown. The fried catfish is a good call.
- Top Notch Burgers — A burger spot located in the Co-op development near the silos.
- Southside Market and Barbecue — A well-known Texas barbecue name with a location in the Co-op area, good for picking up smoked meat while you're exploring that side of town.
Getting to Hutto from Austin
The drive from central Austin to Hutto takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. It's a similar distance to Round Rock or Georgetown, though Hutto doesn't carry the same name recognition yet. There's still a lot of open green space around town, and room for growth means things are likely to keep changing. If you're looking for a low-key evening out with some food and live music without fighting for parking on Sixth Street, Hutto is a reasonable option that most people overlook.
