The video above is a walking tour through the historic downtown area of Katy, TX, covering what to eat, where to find live music, and what makes this part of town worth a visit. David Bridwell drove into Katy on his way to play a gig at The Oaks Kitchen and Bar, and along the way he captured a solid look at the old town center and the surrounding spots that give this area its character. Katy sits right off the Katy Freeway — famously one of the widest freeways in the world, with up to six lanes in each direction plus feeders and toll lanes — about a 30-mile shot west of Houston that takes around 45 minutes outside of rush hour.

Exploring Historic Downtown Katy

The area locals call "Katy proper" has been revitalized in recent years. The historic downtown features brick streets, a mix of older buildings converted into galleries, coffee shops, and small businesses, and a walkable layout centered around the Katy water tower and City Hall. You can check out the railroad heritage at the train museum, which includes a bright red caboose and a yellow train depot near the downtown square. Art galleries, antique shops, salons, and restaurants fill out the blocks. For a lunch stop, the Southern Dough Baking Company and Cafe turned out to be a solid pick with good food.

Just off the downtown square, you can drive down a gravel road past the iconic Katy rice silos — tall column structures that are hard to miss when you're in the area — on your way to a couple of the local breweries and distilleries.

What Live Music Venues Are in Katy, TX?

Katy has a handful of spots that regularly feature live music, mostly clustered around or near the historic downtown area. Here's what the video covers:

  • Katy Crossing Ice House — A casual spot right in the downtown area that features live music, with an easygoing neighborhood bar feel
  • No Label Brewery — Located just past the rice silos, this brewery has a big open outdoor space and hosts live music events regularly
  • MKT Distillery — A craft distillery tucked down a gravel road near the rice silos, not far from No Label Brewery
  • Texas Tradition — Across the road and across the tracks from No Label, another local spot for catching live music
  • The Oaks Kitchen and Bar — A bit further down the road from downtown, this is where David Bridwell played a set on the day of filming and described it as a good hangout with a solid crowd

Getting to Katy from Houston

Katy is accessible via Interstate 10, the Katy Freeway, which connects directly to downtown Houston. The drive is roughly 30 miles and takes about 45 minutes during off-peak hours, though commute times can stretch considerably during rush hour. The town has grown significantly with master-planned communities like Cinco Ranch expanding the boundaries outward, which means traffic around Katy can get heavy. But the historic downtown area itself is compact and easy to walk once you arrive. If you're heading out from Houston specifically for live music and food, the downtown strip and the cluster of venues near the rice silos make for a manageable evening without a lot of driving between stops.
