The video above takes you on a driving tour through Kingwood, TX — a 14,000-acre master-planned community about 30 miles north of Houston that's been around since 1970. Known as the "Livable Forest," Kingwood has a population of roughly 70,000 people and a character that sets it apart from the rest of the Houston sprawl. The tour covers the tree-lined streets, the downtown area, waterfront dining near Lake Houston, and a couple of spots worth knowing about if you're into craft beer and live music.

What Makes Kingwood the "Livable Forest"

Driving through Kingwood, the first thing you notice is the trees — they're everywhere. The community was designed around its natural surroundings, so you're constantly surrounded by canopy even as you move through residential and commercial areas. There's also an extensive network of trails for walking and biking that connects different parts of the community, which is a real draw for people who want outdoor access without leaving the suburbs. Lake Houston sits to the northeast, and some of the smaller waterways and inlets branch right into the area. One solid spot to enjoy that proximity to the water is Shy's Waterfront Grill, which sits right along one of those inlets off Lake Houston. The sweet tea and catfish there hit the mark. The downtown area has a walkable strip with restaurants, shops, and places to grab a drink, though parking can be a bit of a battle. One of the go-to spots for food downtown is Chachi's Mexican Restaurant, which has a strong local following.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Kingwood, TX?

Kingwood isn't exactly overflowing with live music venues, but there are a couple of good ones worth checking out:

  • Megaton Brewery — A large brewery space that hosts live music events. It draws a crowd of craft beer fans, and the size of the room gives bands plenty of space to work with.
  • Deca Beer Company — Located just up the road in nearby Porter, this is a brewery with a loyal, tight-knit crowd. David Bridwell has played here twice and describes it as a genuinely welcoming room where everyone seems to know each other and the energy is supportive and easygoing. It's the kind of place where people come for the beer and stay for the music.

Getting to Kingwood from Houston

Kingwood is roughly a 30-minute drive north of Houston when traffic cooperates. It's accessible enough for a day trip or an evening out if you're coming from the city, but it has enough of its own personality that it doesn't feel like just another Houston suburb. Between the nature trails, the waterfront dining, and a couple of legitimate places to catch live music and craft beer, it's a solid stop — especially if you're already heading northeast toward Porter or the Lake Houston area. David Bridwell passed through on his way to a gig, which is how a lot of these smaller Texas communities end up on the radar: one good venue pulls you in, and you find out the rest of the town has more going on than you expected.
