In the video at the top of this page, David Bridwell takes you on a tour of Liberty Hill, TX — a small town about 30 miles northwest of Austin that still holds onto its own character despite being part of the Greater Austin metro area. David was in town for a gig at Agape Barbecue and decided to walk around the main strip, check out the local food scene, and share what he found. With a population of just around 4,000 as of 2020, Liberty Hill is basically a Main Street strip you can cover on foot, but there's more going on here than you might expect — especially when it comes to live music and good food.

What Live Music Venues Are in Liberty Hill, TX?

For a town this small, Liberty Hill has a surprising number of spots that regularly host live music. Here's what David found while walking around:

  • Heller High Water Brewing — A local brewery located near Parker's Corner Market that features live music, giving you a chance to catch a set while grabbing a craft beer
  • Main Street Social — A large indoor space with multiple food and drink options that opens up to a big outdoor area with picnic tables, shade, and a stage where they put on live music
  • Dahlia Cafe — A popular local restaurant with a sizable outdoor area and its own stage for live music; David ate the Bursting Ring of Fire Burger here and noted how friendly the staff was
  • Agape Barbecue — A barbecue spot with a big outdoor seating area full of picnic tables and shade, where David played his gig; order your food inside and settle in outside for the music

Liberty Hill's Connection to Willie Nelson

One detail David spotted while walking around the main strip was a sign marking Liberty Hill as the host of Willie Nelson's third annual Fourth of July Picnic back in 1975. That event brought in some serious names, including Kris Kristofferson, Doug Sahm, and Charlie Daniels, among others. Willie's Fourth of July Picnic has moved around Texas over the decades, so the fact that Liberty Hill once played host to it is a real piece of Texas music history baked right into the town.

What It's Like Visiting Liberty Hill

David describes Liberty Hill as a place that sometimes gets grouped in with Round Rock and Leander, but it has its own feel — quieter, smaller, and more of a true small-town atmosphere. The main strip is walkable, the locals are genuinely friendly, and the food spots double as live music venues with big outdoor spaces built for hanging out on a nice Texas evening. If you're based in Austin and looking for a low-key outing with barbecue, cold beer, and live music in a less crowded setting, Liberty Hill is worth the short drive. David also performed an original song called "The Mighty Mississippi" during his set at Agape Barbecue, inspired by his visit to the Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. You can catch that performance in the video above.
