The video above walks through a handful of live music Austin venues and bars that are worth knowing about, whether you're visiting for the first time or just looking for somewhere new on a Friday night. David Bridwell hits several well-known spots along with a few under-the-radar picks, covering everything from classic country dance halls to rockabilly clubs and neighborhood juke joints. It's a good, honest look at what a few nights out in Austin actually feel like.

What Are the Best Venues for Live Music and Dancing in Austin?

If you're looking for places where you can actually two-step or just watch great dancers do their thing, these are the spots covered in the video:

  • Broken Spoke — Often called the last of the true Texas dance halls. There's a museum inside packed with memorabilia from George Strait, Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Joe Ely. They offer dance lessons before the band starts, and the dance instructor doesn't hold back roasting tourists who go the wrong way on the floor. The Stateline Band was playing during this visit and sounded great.
  • Sagebrush — This was the favorite of the whole trip. Lucas Hudgens and his band were playing, and the crowd here actually knows how to dance. If you want a night where the music and the dancing are both at a high level, Sagebrush is the move.
  • The Highball — Located right next to the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar, this spot hosts a variety of events. When the music and dancing nights line up, it's a fun time with a lively floor.

More Austin Venues Worth Checking Out

  • Dawn's DepotChris Gage has held a Monday night residency here for a long time. He played lead guitar with Jerry Jeff Walker, and the atmosphere on Monday nights felt genuinely special — engaging and personal in a way bigger venues can't pull off.
  • Continental Club — One of the oldest continuously running clubs in Austin, going strong for over 60 years. Stevie Ray Vaughan played here, among many other Austin legends. The Bell Furies, a rockabilly band, were on stage during this visit, which was a refreshing change from the typical cover band you'd expect on a busy South Congress Friday night.
  • C-Boy's Heart & Soul — A self-described neighborhood juke joint on South Congress with a focus on soul and R&B. The Modern Don Juans were performing and put on exactly the kind of show you'd hope for in a place like this.
  • Little Longhorn Saloon — Calls itself the honkiest, tonkiest beer joint in town and the original home of Chicken Shit Bingo. The band Bakersfield TX was playing, and it's a solid little saloon with dancing and cold beer.
  • Texas Chili Parlor — Not a music venue, but it earned a spot because of the Guy Clark song: "I wish I was in Austin at the Chili Parlor Bar, drinking Mad Dog Margaritas and not caring where you are." The Mad Dog Margaritas are strong and hit fast, and the chili has big chunks of meat and lives up to the reputation.

A Real Look at Austin's Music Scene

What makes this tour useful is that it's not just a list of the most popular places. It mixes in spots like Dawn's Depot on a quiet Monday alongside heavy hitters like the Broken Spoke and the Continental Club. That range gives you a more honest picture of what going out for live music in Austin actually looks like — some nights are legendary, some are just a good time at a small bar with a great player, and both are worth having.
