The video above takes you on a quick tour of Madisonville, Texas, a small town of just over 4,000 people sitting right along Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston. If you've ever blown through Madisonville on a road trip and wondered what's actually there, this is a good look at the downtown square, the local food spots, and the general feel of the place. It's about 150 miles south of Dallas, roughly 100 miles north of Houston, and around 40 miles northeast of College Station, making it one of those towns you pass through without thinking twice — but it's got more going on than you'd expect.

What to See and Do in Madisonville

Madisonville was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, and the town dates back to the mid-1800s. The downtown square wraps around the Madison County Courthouse, which was built in 1970 after the previous one burned down. Around the square you'll find a mix of vintage shops, a pawn shop, real estate offices, and a few restaurants. It's a practical, lived-in kind of downtown — not overly polished, just a real small Texas town where everybody knows everybody and high school football and basketball games are the main events. One claim to fame: Madisonville calls itself the Mushroom Capital of Texas, thanks to a Monterey Mushroom facility in the area. Every October they host the Texas Mushroom Festival, which is now in its 23rd year, featuring food, music, and general small-town fun. The town also has one of the earlier Buc-ee's locations, dating back to 2009.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Madisonville, Texas?

Madisonville isn't exactly a live music hub, but there is at least one spot worth knowing about:

  • Texas Legends Steakhouse (Legends After Dark) — A steakhouse with a bar area called Legends After Dark that hosts live music. David Bridwell actually played a gig here about two years before filming this video. It's the kind of place where you can grab a steak and catch a solo performer or small band in a casual bar setting.

If you're passing through and want a meal, Walker Cafe is well known for homestyle cooking, especially the peach cobbler and sweet tea. L's Mexican Grill is another solid option for Tex-Mex — the food there hit the spot during this stop.

A Good Highway 45 Stop Between Dallas and Houston

Madisonville works best as a break in a long drive. If you're heading from the Dallas-Fort Worth area down to Houston, or vice versa, pulling off I-45 to stretch your legs around the courthouse square and grab a bite is a worthwhile detour. It's not a destination you'd plan a whole trip around, but it's a genuine small Texas town with enough character to make the stop interesting.
