A day trip to Mason, Texas (Texas Hill Country Tour)

The video above takes you along on a day trip to Mason, Texas, a small town of just over 2,000 people tucked into the northern part of the Texas Hill Country. It's about a two-hour drive northwest of Austin, and the route itself is worth the trip — rolling hills, open land, and that wide-open feel you get once you leave the city behind. David Bridwell stopped through Mason as part of a weekend tour that also included a gig at Dreamland in Dripping Springs, and the video gives a solid look at what this little town has going on, from its historic square to its barbecue to its surprisingly deep roots in Texas history.

History and Character of Mason

Mason takes its name from Fort Mason, a mid-1800s military outpost set on a plateau overlooking the surrounding prairie. The fort was home to several Civil War generals, including Robert E. Lee, who served there before the war. That old Western frontier influence still shows up in the town's stone architecture, local businesses, and general feel. There aren't chain restaurants here — just local spots clustered around a historic square that still looks like it could be a set from a period film. The Mason County Courthouse, dating back to 1909, is one of the most recognizable buildings in town. It was damaged in an arson fire in 2021 but has been fully restored, including a crown placed on top. Right next to it sits the old county jail from 1894. The town is also proud of its connection to Fred Gibson, author of Old Yeller, and hosts Old Yeller Days in his honor. Other recurring events include the Roundup Rodeo Parade and Festival every second weekend in July, which often features live music.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Mason, Texas?

Mason isn't a big music destination, but it does have a few spots where you can catch live performances, especially on weekends and during local events. Here's what's around the square:

  • Odeon Theater — The oldest continuously operating theater in West Texas, open since 1928, hosting both films and live concerts
  • Willow Creek Cafe — A popular restaurant on the square that regularly books live music acts alongside its food service
  • Club T-Bo's Bar and Mercantile — A bar and shop combo that sometimes features live music
  • Sandstone Cellars Winery — A local winery that hosts events with live music on occasion

It's not the kind of place where you'll find music every single night, but when something is happening, it tends to draw the whole community out.

Other Things to Do in Mason

Beyond the music and the square, Mason has a good bit of outdoor activity. There are wildflower trails, a limestone cave, and opportunities for hunting, fishing, camping, and kayaking along the river. The town also claims to be the site where the largest gem-quality topaz was found. And if anyone asks whether you stopped at Cooper's Pit Barbecue, the answer should be yes — the original Cooper's location has been here since 1953, long before the brand expanded to other Texas cities. On any given Saturday, you might also find markets, antique shops, and Western wear stores open around the square, making it easy to spend a full afternoon just walking around.
