The video above takes you on a drive through Mesquite, TX, a city of about 150,000 people sitting roughly 15 miles east of Dallas. Often called the front door to Dallas, Mesquite has managed to hold onto a small-town feel despite its size. The footage focuses on the downtown strip and main drag, giving you a real sense of what the city looks like day to day — not just the highlight reel. David Bridwell stopped through on his way to record some new songs at Audio Dallas recording studio up in Garland, and he took the opportunity to explore what Mesquite has to offer.
Western Heritage and the Championship Rodeo
Mesquite's identity is deeply tied to its western roots. The Texas State Legislature officially designated the city the Rodeo Capital of Texas, and it sometimes goes by the unofficial title of Rodeo Capital of the World. The big draw is the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, a nationally televised event that runs every Saturday night from June through August. You'll see traditional timed events like calf roping alongside rough stock events like bull riding. It's a legit rodeo — not a tourist attraction dressed up as one. The city's culture leans heavily into that heritage, along with a strong emphasis on family and youth sports. A lot of the residents are first-time home buyers and young families, many of them working-class folks who moved here to get away from higher costs in Dallas proper while still having a reasonable commute.
What Is There to Do in Mesquite, TX for Entertainment and Live Music?
Honestly, Mesquite doesn't have a huge number of entertainment options within the city itself, and most residents head out to the Dallas area or over to Rockwall when they want a night out. That said, there are a few spots worth knowing about:
- Mesquite Arts Center — A community arts venue that hosts visual arts exhibits, live theater productions, and live music performances. It's the main cultural hub in the city.
- Mesquite Arena — Home to the Mesquite Outlaws indoor soccer team, this venue also hosts various events throughout the year.
- Mesquite Barbecue — A popular local barbecue spot on the main strip. The barbecue was solid and it's clearly a go-to for people in the area.
A Quick Side Trip to Audio Dallas
The video also includes footage from Audio Dallas recording studio in nearby Garland, where David Bridwell laid down a new song called "Montana." It's a nice look at the music scene in this part of the DFW metroplex — smaller studios doing real work outside the usual Dallas and Fort Worth corridors. Mesquite itself is more of a residential, get-your-barbecue-and-watch-the-rodeo kind of town, but its location means you're never far from live music and nightlife in the broader Dallas area. If you're passing through on your way into the city, it's worth a stop.
