Live Music in Texas

A nightlife and restaurant tour of Montrose, Houston Texas

The video above takes you on a walking tour of Montrose, Houston Texas — one of the city's most culturally interesting neighborhoods. Instead of a typical highlight reel, this is a ground-level look at the bars, restaurants, live music spots, and general character of the area on a mellow, cloudy day. David Bridwell was originally headed to Tomball to play a gig at 403 Eats, but rain cancelled the outdoor show, so he spent the day exploring the Montrose neighborhood on foot and documenting what he found.

What Are the Best Bars and Live Music Venues in Montrose Houston?

Montrose has a mix of dive bars, nightclubs, and intimate live music rooms that cover a wide range of tastes. Here are the spots featured in the video:

  • Lola's Depot — A true dive bar where you enter through an unmarked side door that looks like a loading dock. Inside it's dimly lit and gritty, representing the old-school Montrose atmosphere before the neighborhood got trendy.
  • Numbers Nightclub — Regarded as the home of Houston's alternative and underground nightlife. Major acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, and The Cure have played here. The video features a set by The Engineered Society Project.
  • Avant Garden — Located in a historic home, this spot hosts local music on a back stage, an open mic on Tuesdays where you might catch Michael Perkins playing his robot brothel song, poetry nights, and a Thursday variety show with comedy, music, burlesque, and fire performance. The video includes a performance by Taylor Marberry.
  • Bar Boheme — A Montrose hideaway with an old-world vibe. Their Latin nights featuring Grupo Kachi draw crowds of dancers.
  • Catbirds — A cool hangout a few blocks off the main strip, described as where the cool cats and jive birds come to play.

Restaurants and Food Along Fairview Street

The Fairview Street area, offset a couple blocks from the better-known West Alabama corridor, has a solid cluster of restaurants worth checking out:

  • La Mexicana — A popular Tex-Mex spot that comes highly recommended by locals.
  • Cuchara — A self-described "beastro" serving creative Mexican food with standout mole dishes.
  • El Rojo — An Italian place where you can grab a solid meatball sub.
  • Barnaby's Cafe — A well-known Houston cafe chain with a Montrose location offering a wide menu of cafe staples.
  • Fusion Eats — A restaurant along the Fairview strip featured in the walking footage.
  • Chuchita — Another Fairview Street restaurant spotted during the tour.

Gay Culture and Nightlife in Montrose

Montrose has deep roots as a gay community and a longtime center of LGBTQ+ life in Houston. That history is especially visible along Fairview Street, where about seven gay bars and nightclubs sit right next to each other. The strip includes George Country Sports Bar, Ripcord, Club 2.0, Barcode, Crocker, Kiki Houston, and Buddies Houston. Pride flags and rainbow colors are visible throughout the broader neighborhood, but this particular stretch of Fairview is where that identity is most concentrated. It's a walkable area with real character — not a sanitized entertainment district, but an actual community with decades of history behind it.
