The video above takes you on a tour through downtown Navasota, Texas — a small town of about 8,000 people that carries the official title of the Blues Capital of Texas. Located roughly 71 miles northwest of Houston and about a half hour from College Station, Navasota doesn't have many traffic lights, but it's packed with history, character, and a genuine connection to Texas blues music. David Bridwell stopped through town for a gig and spent the day exploring what the area has to offer.

Why Is Navasota Called the Blues Capital of Texas?

Navasota earned that title largely because of Mance Lipscomb, one of the most influential blues musicians to come out of Texas. Lipscomb was a songster and guitarist from the Navasota area who became widely known after being recorded in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was connected to Lightning Hopkins, another Texas blues giant who also came from this part of the state. Downtown Navasota has murals that commemorate their legacy, which are worth tracking down if you're walking around the area. The blues history runs deep here, and you can feel it in the details — even one of the local bookstores, Muddy Water Bookstore, is named after Muddy Waters.

Places to Check Out in Downtown Navasota

The downtown strip is walkable and has a handful of spots worth your time:

  • Muddy Water Bookstore — A local bookstore with a name that tips its hat to blues legend Muddy Waters. A good stop for browsing while you're walking around downtown.
  • Classic Rock Coffee Company and Kitchen — A coffee shop and restaurant with a full classic rock theme, including photos of musicians like Tom Petty on the walls. The food is solid and the atmosphere is fun if you're into rock history.
  • Antique shops along downtown — Several stores with old items and photos that reflect the history of the Navasota area. You can spend a while digging through them.

Threshold Vineyards

Just outside of town, Threshold Vineyards is a spot worth the drive. A long driveway leads you into the property, where there's plenty of open space, tables for sitting and drinking wine, and rows of grapevines you can walk through. When the bluebonnets are in bloom, the surrounding landscape is covered with wildflowers — something you'll notice on the drive in as well, with people pulling off the road to take pictures. David Bridwell performed live music here for guests, and the relaxed, open-air setting made for a great atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can slow down and just enjoy the day.

Navasota sits at a crossroads of Texas blues history and small-town charm. It's an easy day trip from Houston or College Station, and whether you're drawn by the music history, the food, or the wine, there's enough here to make the stop worthwhile.
