The video above takes you on a walking tour of Northgate, College Station — the bar district that sits right across University Drive from the Texas A&M campus. If you've never been, this is the closest thing College Station has to a proper downtown scene, and on any given night it's packed with students making their way between bars, clubs, and late-night spots. With Texas A&M currently the largest university in the United States — more than 70,000 students on campus — it's no surprise that Northgate has grown into something worth checking out on its own.

What Is Northgate in College Station?

Northgate is a concentrated bar district directly across from Texas A&M along University Drive. It's home to around 31 different bars with a combined capacity of roughly 10,000 people. During big campus events like Howdy Week or Aggie football game days, the whole area comes alive. You'll also find Bottle Cap Alley here — a narrow alleyway covered in bottle caps that's become a local landmark. People toss their own caps in as they pass through, and it's one of those quirky College Station traditions that's worth a quick detour.

What Are the Best Bars and Live Music Spots Near Northgate?

Live music options right along Northgate are a little limited compared to districts in Austin or Fort Worth, but there are a few spots that regularly book acts, and the bar scene itself is solid. Here are some of the places highlighted in the video or worth knowing about:

  • Dixie Chicken — One of the oldest bars in the Northgate area, around 40-plus years old and one of the first to serve beer right across from campus. It claims to have the most beer per square foot of any bar in the United States. Full of A&M history and stories.
  • The Corner Bar and Rooftop Grill — A Northgate spot that has featured live music in the past, with a rooftop setup that gives it a different feel from the street-level bars.
  • The Canteen Bar and Grill — Located not far from Northgate, this is one of the more reliable places to catch live music in the College Station area with frequent bookings.
  • Social Lounge — A popular nightlife spot along Northgate catering to the college crowd.
  • Shiner Park — Another bar in the district you'll see signage for as you walk through.
  • 115 — A Northgate bar that's part of the regular rotation for students hitting the strip.
  • Blackwater Draw Brewing Company — Located in neighboring Bryan, this brewpub hosts live music. David Bridwell played a gig here on the same night he filmed the Northgate tour.

Bryan and College Station as a Pair

It's worth noting that Bryan, the neighboring city, adds a lot to the overall nightlife picture. Bryan has its own downtown area with spots like Blackwater Draw that book live music regularly. If you're making a trip out to the area, hitting both Northgate and downtown Bryan in the same night is doable and gives you a much fuller experience than either one alone.
