A tour of the Northside neighborhood in Fort Worth, Texas

The video above takes you on a walking tour of Northside Fort Worth, specifically a small historic district along Main Street that most people drive right past on their way to the Stockyards. David Bridwell was in the area after a gig at Panther Island Brewing Company and decided to finally stop and explore the stretch he'd been curious about for a while. What he found is a neighborhood with deep Hispanic roots, some interesting architecture, and a handful of spots worth knowing about — including at least one place with live music.

What Is the Historic Marine District in Northside Fort Worth?

The area featured in the video spans just a few blocks, roughly from North Side Drive to 20th Street. It's officially known as the Marine Commercial Historic District, or the Historic Marine. North Side Fort Worth as a whole covers a large residential area north of the Trinity River, and the distinction between the north and south sides of the city used to be much more significant back when crossing the river was a bigger deal — think Stockyards on one side, the courthouse on the other. These days the two areas blend together more easily, but the Marine district still has its own character. It's a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood with TexMex restaurants, Michelada spots, murals honoring Latino baseball players, and the History of the Vaquero statue, which recognizes the Mexican horsemen who helped shape the Texas cattle industry along the Chisholm Trail. The Original Mexican Eats Cafe has been around since 1916, and the Fort Worth Marcato building — which looks like an old train depot but is actually a more recent event center with retail on the ground floor — anchors the block.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Northside Fort Worth?

There aren't a ton of live music venues in this particular strip, but a couple of spots stand out, and the broader Northside area has more options nearby:

  • Hugo's Cinco de Mayo Bar and Grill — A local bar and grill in the Marine district that hosts live Tejano music on occasion
  • Rose Marine Theater — A venue dating back to the 1920s and the only active Hispanic theater in Fort Worth, featuring music, dance, theater performances, and film screenings
  • Panther Island Brewing Company — A brewery not far from the Marine district where David Bridwell played a Sunday afternoon set; it's a solid spot to catch live music in a relaxed, casual setting

Worth a Stop on the Way to the Stockyards

If you've driven through this stretch of Main Street heading to the Stockyards and wondered what was there, it's worth pulling over. The neighborhood is quiet and doesn't scream for attention, but the history runs deep. Grab some TexMex at a place like La Maya, check out the murals, and see if the Rose Marine Theater has anything on the schedule. It's an easy side trip that gives you a completely different side of Fort Worth than the tourist-facing Stockyards just up the road.
