Stockyards, Fort Worth: Cattle Drive, Famous BBQ & Live Music

The video above walks through a day in the Stockyards, Fort Worth — from the famous cattle drive to barbecue to live music and a gig at a local brewery. David Bridwell came into town to play a show but spent the day exploring what makes this part of Fort Worth such a draw for visitors and locals. The Stockyards district leans hard into its cowboy heritage, and it's not subtle about it — Wrangler jeans everywhere, historic brick buildings, and an atmosphere that feels distinctly Texan without trying to be anything else.

What Live Music Venues Are in the Fort Worth Stockyards?

The Stockyards area has a solid mix of places to catch live music, from massive honky-tonks to casual brewery setups. Here are the spots featured or referenced in the video:

  • Billy Bob's Texas — Calls itself the world's largest honky-tonk, and it's probably right. This is one of the most well-known live music venues in the state, booking national touring acts alongside dance floors and bar areas spread across a massive indoor space.
  • Second Rodeo Brewing — A brewery with a big beer garden and courtyard area right next to a large rodeo building. Mike Randall and the High Road were playing the outdoor courtyard during this visit, and it felt like a natural spot to grab a beer and stumble into good music.
  • Hop Fusion Ale Works — A craft brewery in Fort Worth where David Bridwell played a gig. It's a cool spot with a good crowd and an interesting setup — including alligator-themed décor that gives it some character. Not in the Stockyards district itself but nearby and worth the trip.

The Stockyards Cattle Drive and Cooper's Pit Barbecue

One of the signature things about the Stockyards is the cattle drive. They actually drive a herd of longhorns right down the street, and it's one of those things that sounds like a tourist gimmick until you're standing there watching it happen. It's free to watch and runs twice daily on most days.

On the food side, Cooper's Pit Barbecue is a popular stop in the Stockyards area. The brisket and the single rib are the moves, though be ready for the price tag — the ribs were around twenty bucks each, and the whole meal came out to just over fifty dollars. That said, the food was really good and genuinely worth it. The Cooper's ribs in particular are the kind of thing you keep thinking about after the fact.

A Good Starting Point for Fort Worth

If you're visiting Fort Worth and want a concentrated dose of Texas culture, the Stockyards district is a straightforward place to start. You can watch the cattle drive, eat solid barbecue at Cooper's, and catch live music at multiple venues all within walking distance. It's one of those areas where you don't need much of a plan — just show up and wander.
