If you're wondering what to do in Houston and you're into live music, the video at the top of this page is a solid place to start. It walks through 14 different bars, venues, and unexpected spots across Houston where you can catch live music on any given night of the week. From well-known music halls to coffee shops and record stores, this is a real look at what Houston's music scene actually feels like on the ground.

Where Can You Find Live Music in Houston?

Houston has live music spread across a bunch of different neighborhoods, and the variety is one of the best things about it. Here are the 14 spots featured in the video, each with its own personality:

  • White Oak Music Hall — One of Houston's top music venues with an outdoor amphitheater and two indoor stages, hosting a wide range of ticketed acts. Slade Coulter was playing the upstairs stage on this visit.
  • Under the Volcano — A colorful, Mexican-inspired bar known for cocktails, Argentine-style empanadas, and live music on Wednesdays. John Egan performed here.
  • Dan Electro's — A recently revamped spot for live blues and acoustic music with shows most nights, supporting local bands and touring artists. Croy and the Boys played a great set here.
  • La Cosecha — A music and dance spot with bachata, tango, and swing dance nights. They also bring in live jazz, blues, and rock and roll.
  • Riverhouse Houston — Located near Buffalo Bayou in the East End with skyline views and an outdoor stage. Ben McPeak was performing.
  • La Grange — In the heart of the Montrose neighborhood, serving up regional Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes with live music. Dem Roots played a end-of-summer cookout party here.
  • Cones — A coffee house by day, wine and beer spot by night near Midtown. Intimate and mellow, with regular Sunday jazz sessions and a focus on visual art too.
  • Buffalo Grille — A family-run breakfast spot around since 1984 that hosts a Wednesday bluegrass jam in a dedicated section packed with regulars.
  • Benny Thunder — A self-serve beer spot in the Heights where you can sample a range of interesting brews while catching live music. Nathan Quick and Scott Benton were playing.
  • EQ Heights (Equilibrium Social House) — A Heights coffee shop that gets packed when they feature live music. The group Traveler drew a big crowd.
  • Jack's Grill — The Shepherd location serves American fare and seafood with Cajun and Southern flavors. Lots of zydeco on weekends, and a summer Texas country series on Thursdays hosted by Rich O'Toole featuring artists like Robert of Galveston and Jade Marie Paige.
  • Cactus Music — Houston's historic independent record shop with over 40 years of history, hosting album release parties and intimate in-store shows. The Swimwear Department played a fun afternoon set here.
  • Continental Club — A great live music club in Midtown, and yes, Houston has one just like the famous Austin location. Summerann put on a set worth going out for.
  • Shoe Shine Charlie's — Right next door to the Continental Club, a more intimate and typically cheaper option. You can go back and forth between the two since they're attached. DGRZ was rocking the house here.

What Neighborhoods Have the Best Live Music in Houston?

The video covers a lot of ground geographically. The Heights area has several spots clustered together, including Benny Thunder and EQ Heights. Montrose has La Grange and a feel all its own. Midtown is home to both Continental Club and Shoe Shine Charlie's, plus Cones. The East End near Buffalo Bayou has Riverhouse Houston with those skyline views. There's no single "live music district" — it's spread out, which means you can find something going on in almost any part of the city.
